start capturing in promiscuous mode if you see traffic from other
addresses other than broadcast traffic you are in a non-switched
environment.

Anyway, as of today a switch is even cheaper than a hub, and given the
huge advantages it gives it would be very stupid not to use one.
That's why it is very unlikely that you find yourself in an
"old-fashioned" non-switched LAN.
