Hi - This is my first post to this list. I am trying to test if our fibre carrier will pass 802.1q packets across our WAN links. We have got a fibre optic VLAN offering from a prominent carrier in Australia, but they cannot tell me whether I can pass these packets. I have 2 x 3Comm 4250 switches with 2 VLANS configured on each, and I want to put one on either end of the ethernet link across the WAN and see whether I can capture the traffic with tagged packets. The thing is, I am not sure what to look for in the Ethereal dump.

You should see some VLAN tags, see: http://wiki.ethereal.com/VLAN.

I am also not sure if my Broadcom NetXtreme adaptor in my laptop will pass these packets.

See: http://wiki.ethereal.com/CaptureSetup/VLAN for the information we have on this.
