Presumably running OS X?  (If you're not running OS X, Ethereal isn't 
supported; it handles UN*X (for example, OS X, although you need X11) 
and Windows, but not pre-OS X Mac OS.)

You should just be able to capture on the 802.11 interface, although the 
packets will look like Ethernet packets, and you'll only get data 
packets, not management or control packets:

At least it's not as bad as Windows....
