It can be a plugin - that's what the "ASN.1" dissector (the one that 
causes crashes; I checked in a fix for some null pointer dissection 
problems in that dissector that *might* have been the problem causing 
the crashes, so there *might* be a fix in the next release).

Download the Ethereal source and look at the "README" files in the "doc" 
directory as well as some of the "packet-" source files in 
"epan/dissectors" and the subdirectories of "plugins".
