Googling on 'TDS protocol' gave me this page:

which mentions that packets larger than 512 bits are fragmented by 
the protocol.

I've seen occasional problems with switches where the chipset doesn't
correctly forward some fragments after the first because it's assuming 
the presence of header fields that are missing in the following frames.

Try bypassing your switch and testing the backup again.
