I.e., it's something like a Linksys BEFW11S4, with the "wired 10/100 
network" being the switch inside the Linksys box, so that the cable 
modem and Ethereal machine are both plugged into the Linksys box?

If so, then, yes, the XBox traffic will go through the switch to the 
cable modem (and vice versa) without being shown to the Ethereal 
machine, and you'll have to put in a non-switched hub between the cable 
modem and the Linksys box, and tap into that hub with the Ethereal 
machine.
