The crash problem is caused by a non-FW1 capture file being interpreted as a FW1 capture. There is a protocol preference for the Ethernet dissector which allows Ethereal to interpret a given capture as being a FW1 capture. The default value of this preference is off.

However the crashes Mike mentions mean that the FW1 dissector currently does not handle "incorrect packets" in a robust way. Maybe we should rewrite the FW1 dissector so it performs the job of a heuristic dissector and only sets the protocol info if FW1 dissection succeeded.

The Gdk warnings are annoying but not critical. Are you using a proportional font or a font with a fixed width?

 

Do you have a small capture (you can share) which causes the crash?

I'm running Ethereal 0.10.0 on my Windows 2000 PC.  I often get the errors below. 

(ethereal.exe:1700): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_text_size: gdk_nmbstowchar_ts failed  
(ethereal.exe:1700): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_win32_draw_text: gdk_nmbstowchar_ts failed

Also, Ethereal crashes very frequently with the message "Ethereal.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows."

I've had the same problem with previous version 0.9.9 and 0.9.16.

Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?  Any solutions/suggestions?
