Is it possible that you haven't installed WinPcap? (This is mentioned on http://www.ethereal.com/distribution/win32/ ). 

If you have what is the output of running "tethereal -D"
Note that PPP support is problematic on NT/2K/XP?

Hi 

I am running Win98SE and WinNT4 neither platform will work. THe software loads up but when I initate a capture I get errors. On Win98 I get a Con not initiate adaptor and on WIN NT4 I just get an Error! box.

Any one experienced this?
