The vast majority of GUI applications for UNIX-compatible OSes (or, at
least, those UNIX-compatible OSes that don't have the letters "M", "a",
"c", "O", "S", and "X" in their names :-)) will *only* run that way -
the bulk of UNIX systems ("bulk" by number of different operating
systems, not "bulk" by number of machines running them - for all I know,
MacOS X may win on the latter) use X-based GUIs. (The major commercial
UNIXes not from Apple, the major Linux distributions, and
{Free,Net,Open}BSD all have X-based GUIs as standard.)
