Ethereal (like tcpdump, and other programs using libpcap/WinPcap) is at the mercy of the device drivers and the rest of the OS for packet-capture services.
Ethereal on other platforms can *read* 802.11 captures taken with other platforms or with some other applications, but it can't *itself* capture on 802.11 devices.
