Do you mean a 2.4.16 kernel? Because that is what is typically suggested for that kind of work. The FAQ item at http://www.ethereal.com/faq.html#q4.21 says you need Linux, with a 2.4.6 or later kernel or FreeBSD 4.5 or later. Ethereal (like tcpdump, and other programs using libpcap/WinPcap) is at the mercy of the device drivers and the rest of the OS for packet-capture services.
