It's impossible *NOT* to save captured data to a file! Ethereal always does so. By default, it captures to a temporary file, which would probably be in "/tmp" or "/var/tmp" on UNIX and "c:\temp" on Windows. If, however, you specify a name in the "File:" box in the "Capture Options" dialog box that appears when you select "Start" from the "Capture" menu, it'll save the captured data to the file whose pathname you've specified. You can also, when the capture is complete, use the "Save As..." item under the "File" menu to copy the capture to another file.
