The switch likely will not forward non-broadcast packets flowing between two ports, to a third port where the ethereal is connected, unless you use a port replication configuration inside the switch so that all traffic goes also to the port where the ethereal is connected... I am not sure all switches allow this to be done. Bridging-type captures are much easier on a flat hub where all ports see all traffic. And be careful of dual-speed (10 / 100) hubs with dissimilar speeds being used at the same hub device where the 10 devices don't see the 100 traffic usw. > -----Original Message----- > From: Whetstone, Joe [SMTP:JWhetstone@xxxxxxxx] > Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2002 15:14 > To: 'ethereal-users@xxxxxxxxxxxx' > Subject: [Ethereal-users] not a clue > > How does the ethereal software capture packets on an Ethernet switch ? > Trying VoIP and want to see what the DSCP values are for traffic sent to > an > IP phone connected to a switch that should be capable of traffic > prioritization. >
