Other alternatives include

	1) running a capture program on machine "y", if possible;

	2) if the switch supports RMON, including capturing and saving
	   packet traces, using that - however, I don't know what
	   switches support that, I don't know what tools there are to
	   do that, and I don't know if any of those tools can write to
	   a file in a format Ethereal can read;

and then having Ethereal read the resulting capture file.
