My idea:

1. On NT use Profile-Dir - and set HOME accordingly, if not set.
2. On W9x use C:\programs\common files\ethereal per default, but give
the option on install to set a home-dir -> set environment variable
HOME.

I think that should be the default behavior for *all* UNIXish programs.
Following this path there should be easy sailing for all programs
using $HOME (under NT/W9x %HOME% of course).

I'm using Cygwin/Jade/MikTeX ... with explicit set %HOME%-variable
without any problems.

PS: Any way for ethereal to behave more Windows GUI-conforming (
preferences dialog, file open/save)? Not a problem for _me_ but
for some "Windows only" people ;-)
