The interface name "lan0" suggests that it might be HP-UX.

"After install the libpcap, I rename the directory /opt/libpcap to
libpcap-0." suggests that he might have installed a new version of
libpcap in place of what was already there.

If so, and if he is, in fact, running HP-UX 10.x or 11.x, he should have
applied the patch from the "README.hpux" file to libpcap; if not,
libpcap won't recognize any interfaces by name, regardless of whether
you're running Ethereal or...

If he *has* applied that patch, we'd need to do some debugging.
