you must be running it on a remote machine - that message as if the DISPLAY variable is not set... I would test by running xterm, and see if you get the same message, or something similiar.. try man xterm to see the options for remote display in a nutshell; probably export DISPLAY=###.###.###.###:0.0 or some variation depending on you shell.
