Problem found -- an IDE for embedded development had also installed
some (old) cygwin binaries. Those got used now because the cygwin path
is now appended to $PATH (was prepended before).

Sorry for bothering you. BTW, is there Windows program similar to the
"which" command on linux (besides the cygwin which)?
