Now, that's rather interesting: Gcc 3 and autoconf 2.13 don't mix well, so

Warning: In case you did compile a GTK v1 tree and then just did a
./configure --enable-gtk2 && make, then I have a very good idea about
what is going wrong: Please try a make clean in between.

I found out that "pro" means "instead of" (as in proconsul). Now I know
what proactive means.
