The page at http://www1.math.luc.edu/~anca/488-8.html says in its discussion of 802.2 LLC: SABME supports 128 sequence numbers. which suggests that's how basic vs. extended is selected; however, as noted in this discussion, if you don't have the SABME frame in your capture, the analyzer program has no way of knowing whether it's basic or extended operation.
