I thought I had made a suggestion which was going to greatly simplify things.
The idea is always to do the simplest thing which works, then consider 
improvements. This has been done, writing code over and over for every new
protocol works, now we consider ways to simplify and save that coding and 
compile time.

1)Re: Startup time

If this becomes a problem, I suggest we consider the issue then.

Another idea off the top of my head: Use perl or tcl for the configuration
language. It is relatively easy to add commands to either interpreter and
this routines could be direct links to C calls in ethereal, so you can have
your cake and eat it too (hopefully as far as speed)

2) I don't think this is Creeping featurism? I think we agree here.
